For decades,

I longed to openly hold the hand of my beloved,

too fearful because she was the same sex as me.

For a lifetime,

I dreamed of my country accepting me as I am,

yearning only for the same civil rights permitted to every other citizen.

For an eternity,

our country will remember this moment in time,

representing the start of equality, compassion and love of all people.

A leader rises from a stance of humility:

a scholar who never brags,

a soldier who will not attack his brother,

an American who believes grace is the gateway to diplomacy.

From this point forward,

all of us -

all colors and creeds,

all orientations and identities,

all faiths and beliefs -

will march lockstep into a new America,

a country we can all be proud of.

Let us all rejoice,

for in this new United States,

for this new generation,

it is Inauguration Day!
